The initial residence permit is valid for one year. Upon renewal, it becomes valid for two years, with subsequent renewals also valid for two years each.

To preserve your residence status, you must spend a significant portion of the year in the country. This often entails spending more than 183 days a year in Italy to be considered a tax resident. Long durations of absence from Italy may threaten your residence permit, rendering it invalid or terminated. However, occasional trips outside of Italy are normally authorized as long as you continue to meet the major conditions, which include financial stability and retaining your principal residence in Italy.
